Pay What You Want For Girl Talk

Girl Talk Feed The Animals Album Cover

That’s some album cover, huh?

Girl Talk’s new album, Feed The Animals, is out today and much like Radiohead and Trent Reznor’s latest releases, it’s a “pay what you want” situation where you name your price to download the music.

If you’ve never heard of Girl Talk before, go ahead and pay the $0.00 to download Feed The Animals because it’s going to be the soundtrack to your next party.  It’s the art of mashups taken to a new apogee.  There’s over a hundred sampled artists/songs throughout the 14 song album.  Along with being an achievement in music composition, it’s also kinda fun just trying to name all the songs you know.  Trust me, hearing Kelly Clarkson’s Since U Been Gone matched with Nine Inch Nails’ Wish going into Radiohead’s 15 Step vs. Blackstreet’s No Diggity is something that is mindblowing.

For the legions of Girl Talk fans already out there, there’s some goodies for you if you hit some donation goals.  According to the Stereogum comments:

any price grants the download of the entire album as high-quality 320kbps mp3s
$5 or more adds the options of FLAC files, plus a one-file seamless mix of the album
$10 or more includes all of the above + a packaged CD (when it becomes available)

Download Girl Talk – Feed The Animals here

(Payments are processed via Paypal, so don’t be alarmed if you’re asked to put in your credit card number in a somewhat questionable text box)

A full list of songs sampled is after the jump.

Battle of the Bands for…A Game Soundtrack

attack the soundtrack logo

InstantAction, an action web-gaming destination powered by Garage Games, is running a competition for aspiring music artists to get their music featured on a game soundtrack. The competition is called “Attack The Soundtrack,” with finalists determined by a fan vote and the winner by a panel of “industry vets” including rapper, Fat Joe.

I’m curious as to which industry they’re talking about, music or gaming. As a connoisseur of both mediums, I’d actually feel better if the judges had backgrounds in game music supervising or design, rather than large rappers who “get it poppin’.” It’d also be cool if we knew more context of game the competition was for, so musicians could get a better feel for what types of songs would work the best.

Nevertheless, I like the idea of emerging game companies and musicians forming a symbiotic relationship. It’s a natural evolution in the age old “battle of the bands” competition. Hopefully in the future we can see game scoring competitions and the like. Who knows, maybe the next John Williams will get his or her start with video games.

The Wu-Tang Clan Launch Chess Community Site

wuchess logo

I wouldn’t be the first one in line to join a social network for either chess or The Wu-Tang clan, but shit, if you combine the two?  I’m there.  Especially when the tag line for the site is:

WuChess taking the game of life to the next level.

Wuchess promises the ability to play live chess versus humans or an AI, partcipate in tournaments, social networking, create chess clans, or even play against the RZA, the GZA, and the rest of the Wu-Tang clan.

Unfortunately, this fun is going to cost you $40 up front per year to join.  I really wish they had a free portion of the site to try out as $40 is a pretty big investment to ask of new users without letting them test drive it.

Hopefully cooler heads will prevail and they’ll open up the site soon.

Weezer Is Good At The Internet

Although their new single Pork and Beans has been out for awhile now, Weezer has just put the finishing touches on the video for the song. It pretty much includes every internet meme over the past few years – kinda like that recent South Park episode.

I gotta say though, I was pretty impressed with the inclusion of the Gi-Joe PSAs – that definitely gives Rivers and Co. some intarweb street cred.

Your Chance To Teabag Death Cab For Cutie In Call Of Duty 4

death cab for cutie pew pew pew

If you think Death Cab For Cutie is too “emo” for this world, now’s your chance to virtually teabag them after shooting them to death online!

Nick and Jason from DCFC will be playing Call of Duty 4 against any and all thirteen year olds opponents this Friday, May 16th from 7:30-9:30 EST. You’ll only be able to play against them if you have the Xbox 360 version of the game, though.

If you’re an Xbox LIVE Gold member, and you want a chance to play with Death Cab for Cutie, send a friend request to the following Gamertags and be online half an hour before (7:00 P.M. ET) the Game with Fame session starts at 7:30 P.M. ET on Friday, May 16:

  • GWF DCFC Nick
  • GWF DCFC Jason

It’s too bad there’s no extra in game challenge XP awards for killing indie rockers, that should be good for at least 1000xp in game.

Maybe someone should set Akon and T-Pain up with the boys over at hellogoodbye for some conference call sass.

What Being Nominated For A Grammy Gets You

kt tunstall fail

I just got an email from Goldstar Events telling me that I could have “comped” tickets to a KT Tunstall show at the Wiltern in LA, presumably because no one bought tickets to the show.

The sad thing is, the Wiltern is only about a mid-sized theater venue, seating roughly 2,500 people.  It’s not as if she was trying to play a large arena way over her head.

It just goes to show that being a successful touring artist has nothing to do with your Grammy nominations, Grey’s Anatomy soundtrack appearances, or Billboard Hot 100 single entries.

A shame, though, I kinda liked “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree.”  But not enough to take free tickets to a local show.  Gas is expensive these days, you know.

This One’s On Trent

nine inch nails the slip album art

Remember the cryptic ID3 tag from the Nine Inch Nails – Discipline single download a couple weeks ago?  Well, May 5th is upon us and a visit to nin.com reveals that the surprise is none other than a completely free download of a new Nine Inch Nails album entitled The Slip.

as a thank you to our fans for your continued support, we are giving away the new nine inch nails album one hundred percent free, exclusively via nin.com.

the music is available in a variety of formats including high-quality MP3, FLAC or M4A lossless at CD quality and even higher-than-CD quality 24/96 WAVE. your link will include all options – all free. all downloads include a PDF with artwork and credits.

for those of you interested in physical products, fear not. we plan to make a version of this release available on CD and vinyl in july. details coming soon.

I love how Trent continues to put out his material in proper digital formats, word is that the MP3 encodes are LAME V0 – none of this “encoded in iTunes” n00bery.  All it takes to download is your email address again.  I’m still waiting on my download link, but it looks to be the same process as it was in downloading “Discipline.”

Although, coming so quickly off the heels of “Ghosts I-IV,” I have a sliver of doubt of the album’s quality.  I’m guessing it’s a more traditional Nine Inch Nails album, but could Trent be oversaturating us with material?

Regardless, free albums are awesome, especially with the presentation that Trent is putting forth here.

Download The New Nine Inch Nails Single For Free

nine inch nails discipline single new cover art

No, that’s not a black and white version of Coldplay’s X&Y cover up there, it’s the cover to the latest Nine Inch Nails single, Discipline.  This ain’t no BS instrumental either,  we get to hear Trent Reznor’s soothing vocals layered over a 122 bpm bed.  It’s a vintage Nine Inch Nails song, fans casual and hardcore alike should be into it.

If you look within the ID3 tag of the single, there’s a cryptic note that says:

Go to www.nin.com May 5

Hmmmm, maybe more free tracks? An album release date?

You can get your own copy of discipline here.  All it takes is your email and you get a pristinely encoded VBR MP3.  Trent takes care of his fans.
